The best M42 lenses to use have A(uto)/M(anual) switch which allows control of the aperture on other cameras. Otherwise, the lens remains wide open. This is usually OK for macro work where you need lots of light but your DOF will be smaller.

Hanimar 135mm f2.8 wo/AM switch
These M42 lenses can be used on your film/digital SLR. I am using one on my Canon and my Pentax K20D.
